How should a 2 year old hold a crayon?

At the age of 2, toddlers are still developing their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, so their grip on crayons and other writing tools may not be fully developed. However, it is generally recommended to encourage toddlers to hold the crayon with their thumb and fingers, rather than grasping it with their fist. This is sometimes called a “tripod grip” or “pincer grip”.

To help your 2 year old hold a crayon correctly, you can try offering them shorter and thicker crayons that are easier to grip. You can also sit with your child and model the correct grip for them, while encouraging them to try it themselves. Be patient and don’t worry too much if their grip isn’t perfect yet, as it will likely continue to develop over time with practice.
